The Master Sets Box Office Record In Limited Release

Opening in only five theaters in the US this weekend, Paul Thomas Anderson´s highly anticipated film The Master managed to set a new box-office record. The film has been getting very good reviews at both the Toronto and Venice film festivals and is looking to be one of the Oscar frontrunners this year.

Anderson is not exactly known for high grossing films, his previous picture, the brilliant There Will Be Blood, earning a total of  $78.2mill worldwide on a budget of $25mill. His films are however known for their fine craft and Anderson has a relatively large fan base following him. His latest picture The Master, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, managed to gross an average of $145,949 per theater, which is the highest ever for a live-action film. The previous record was held by Anderson´s (Wes Anderson that is) film Moonrise Kingdom from earlier this year, which grossed an average of $130,749.

It will be interesting to see how well the film eventually does as it is sure to get a boost from Oscar nominations. Personally I can’t wait till the film is released in a local theater, as I am a big fan of both There Will Be Blood and Magnolia. Be sure to stay tuned for more film news and reviews!
