Oblivion vs. After Earth

There are a lot of promising science-fiction films scheduled for release next year, the two most exciting being Cuarón´s Gravity and Bloomkamp´s Elysium, however this past week we have gotten trailers for After Earth and Oblivion. Both films seem to contain a post-apocalyptic vision of Earth, as well as some major star power in the form of Will Smith and Tom Cruise, as well as being released just a little over a month apart.

After Earth is directed by M. Night Shyamalan, which marks his first film since his critical and financial failure, The Last Airbender, and could potentially make or break his career, considering the downward slope he has been on since The Sixth Sense. It is the first time he directs a film he didn’t write himself and with Will Smith as producer he won´t get as much freedom as he usually gets, which is probably a good thing… still got to admit I think this looks pretty bad.

However I have to say Oblivion looks far superior in my opinion, that’s not to say this doesn’t have potential to be atrocious, because I think it absolutely does; yet it has potential to be great as well. When comparing the two trailers, this seems to be way less cheesy and could be quite epic. Besides Morgan Freeman looks pretty damn awesome as the villain (?). I am not a huge fan of Tom Cruise, but I can get past it if the rest of the movie is good.

Be sure to check the trailers out and see for yourself which you are more excited for.
