The Incredible Hulk (2008) Review

The Incredible Hulk is the second entry in Marvel´s Cinematic Universe, released the same summer Iron Man, it never got the same amount of financial success. The film opens with an opening credits that shows the origin of the hulk and giving us his backstory before jumping five years to where Banner is now hiding out in Brazil. He finds someone who might be able to cure his condition, but he has to go back into the US, where he his wanted by the military. Emil Blonsky, played by Eli Roth, a British-Russian soldier working for the Americans becomes obsessed with the Hulk and does anything to catch him or kill him.

Now first of all not having seen any previous Hulk film and not knowing the details of his origin I was completely lost and I found the fact that they told his origin in five minutes with pictures was a bad idea. It felt like I was watching a sequel without having seen the original. It is also the problem that we never really get a proper introduction to Dr Banner and were quickly thrown into a big action scene, but that’s like one of the first things that happen and we really don’t care for him because he has absolutely no personality. Here we also get introduced to Emil Blonsky who in my opinion had much more character then Banner. Now that’s not to say I don’t think Edward Norton does a good job in his role, the problem is that he is written as one of the most forgettable protagonists ever. His role has absolutely nothing to him and he is just kind of there. As for Emil Blonsky, I thought he was pretty awesome and Eli Roth is very good, however when he turns into the Abomination, it is one of the silliest things I have ever seen. I would have bought him if he was just a beast, but he is running around smiling and laughing and trying to piss the hulk of and it was incredibly silly.

The acting was in general pretty good with two big exceptions. William Hurt as the general chasing Banner was pretty bad in my opinion, it just seemed like he really didn’t care and just wanted to get out of there. It was like he decided just to not take it seriously since it was a comic book movie. Another example is “Mr Blue” played by Tim Blake Nelson, who was just incredibly over the top and very annoying to watch.

There are three major action sequences in the film, the first one being the films opening action sequence, which felt a bit too much like a bad version of Jason Bourne with chases on the rooftops. What was the most silly part about this was that when he eventually turned into the Hulk he was just in the shadows and we didn’t get to see what he looked like, however this just seemed pointless, because 99% of people seeing the film already know what he looks like and so it really had no effect. Also somehow he overnight ran from Brazil to Guatemala… because that’s not far at all. The second action scene was probably my favourite, back in the US the military had a massive attack on the hulk and there was a well done fight between Eli Roth and the hulk. However one thing took me out of this sequence as well, the CGI. The CGI in this movie is horribly cheesy looking and nothing looks like it would exist in real life and just wasn’t believable. As for the hulk he looked reasonably real, but he still looked silly and I have seen much better looking hulks. Then there was the final battle, which was absolutely horrible, a completely ridiculous CGI fest where I really had hard time caring who won, though by the end I did start cheering for the hulk, mostly because of how stupid the abomination was. My biggest problem with the climactic battle is (spoiler) they said Banner was cured and they showed him not being able to hulk, but then all of a sudden a jumped off a helicopter and crashed into the ground and became the hulk without any explanation to as why he all of a sudden wasn’t cured after all.

The worst part of the film would have to be the directing and I hate to point to someone out like this, but this was awfully overproduced. Everything from the music to the look of the film was immensely overproduced and there was no way for the viewers to put themselves into the movie when the director was trying way too hard to make it epic. For example, it started raining all of a sudden every time there was some romantic going on and it was that really fake looking movie rain that just goes straight down and you could tell it isn’t raining one block away. Also it seemed like it was the same music playing all the way through every action sequence and it got so repetitive.

I’m not saying you can’t have a good time with this film (most people seem to like it), but I thought it had an awfully cheesy and empty script with a messy story. There was little to no character and really nobody to care about. The story was for the most part uninteresting and I felt it would have been much more interesting to see the story showed in the first five minutes (but they apparently showed that in the hulk movie from five years earlier). The movie was way too overproduced and though the action was somewhat entertaining, it was hard to get past the bad CGI (and Iron Man which came out the same year had very good CGI). It has certain good parts, but for the most part I was pretty bored and rolling my eyes and just unable to enjoy the film.

1.5/5
